According to media reports, the HSBC head decided to quit the South African sector after almost 30 years. It is seen was made in year 2024, and now in the year 2026, the HSBC has officially quit and exited the South African banking sector.
The exit process will be finalized through a transfer of clients and assets to First Run and it’s the leading merchant bank. Moreover, in another side, the South African Reserve Bank has also officially withdrawn the HSBC private bank’s working mandate in South Africa and to operate in South Africa.
So it will end the physical presence of HSBC in South Africa. Further, despite the exit of HSBC from the banking sector of South Africa, the banking sector of South Africa will remain intact and strong, with major banks working in South Africa as Nedbank, Capitec Bank, Standard Bank, and First Run.
